Pastor Tracy's Message
Standing Near the Cross: The Crowd
Join us as we continue with our Lenten sermon series, “Standing Near The Cross.” This week we turn our attention to the crowds who had also gathered to witness the crucifixion.
Of all the characters we have looked at who were there that day, it is this “crowd” in the background that I can identify with most often – the people who stood by watching, and could not or simply did not prevent the tragedy. I think about all those times I stand by watching - frightened by the power of evil, overwhelmed by the scope of an issue, or doubting my ability to make a difference.
The scripture says “the crowd saw what had happened, and they returned home beating their breasts.” Sometimes guilt becomes a convenient substitute for responsibility. Yet the purpose and power of both the cross and resurrection is not to leave us overwhelmed with a sense of guilt. It is to remind us that upon the cross Christ offers us a word of forgiveness that brings us the freedom and responsibility to make this world look a bit more like the kingdom of God.
